Powerpack End-of-Life & Safety Considerations

FONZ Powerpacks are designed and tested to deliver reliable performance and safety throughout their expected service life when used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.

As lithium-ion batteries age, normal chemical and electrical changes occur within the cells. While a Powerpack (battery cells and management system) may continue to operate near or beyond its expected service life, its performance and safety characteristics can become less predictable over time.

For this reason, FONZ defines an expected service life for each Powerpack of seven years, and recommends replacement once this limit is reached, regardless of apparent performance.

Why replacement is recommended at end of service life

  • Battery cells naturally age at different rates, which can increase internal imbalance within the Powerpack

  • Ageing cells may generate more heat during charging and high load conditions

  • The Battery Management System (BMS) is designed to operate within defined lifecycle parameters and may have reduced ability to mitigate cell degradation beyond this point

These factors do not indicate an immediate safety issue, but they reduce safety margins over time, particularly during charging.

Charging and storage considerations

Charging places the highest electrical and thermal load on a battery. For this reason, using a Powerpack beyond its recommended service life may increase risk during charging, even if the vehicle continues to operate normally.

FONZ recommendation

To ensure rider safety, vehicle reliability, and compliance with manufacturer specifications:

  • Powerpacks should be replaced once they reach end of service life

  • Only genuine FONZ Powerpacks and charger units should be used

  • Powerpacks should be charged, stored, serviced, and disposed of according to FONZ guidelines

End-of-life handling

End-of-life Powerpacks should not be resold or reused and must be handled and disposed of through approved channels.

What is inside a FONZ Powerpack?
A FONZ Powerpack is a fully integrated energy system — not just a collection of battery cells. It comprises multiple lithium-ion cells arranged in a controlled configuration, a Battery Management System (BMS) that continuously monitors voltage, temperature, current and cell balance, integrated temperature sensors and thermal protection components, electrical protection devices such as fuses and contactors, communication circuitry for safe charging, and a sealed structural housing designed to protect the internal components from impact, vibration, dust and moisture. All components are engineered to operate together as a complete safety system, which is why only approved FONZ Powerpacks and charger units should be used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.

Legal Notice / Safety Disclaimer
FONZ Powerpacks contain lithium-ion cells and are designed for use only with FONZ vehicles and approved FONZ chargers. Improper use, charging, maintenance, or modification of the Powerpack — including use beyond its recommended service life — may result in reduced performance, property damage, injury, or, in rare circumstances, fire. FONZ accepts no liability for incidents arising from non-compliance with manufacturer instructions, guidelines, or approved handling and disposal procedures.
