Charging Environment & Conditions: Why a Charger May Spark if Foreign Material Enters

FONZ chargers are designed so that foreign material do not enter the charger housing. However, if something does get inside, it can sometimes create an unintended electrical connection.

FONZ chargers are designed so that foreign material do not enter the charger housing. However, if something does get inside, it can sometimes create an unintended electrical connection.

Examples of foreign material could include:

  • Insects

  • Dust or debris

  • Water ingress

  • Small particles entering through the cooling fan or ventilation openings

If any material bridges electrical components inside the charger, it can create a conductive path for electricity to flow where it normally shouldn’t. This may result in a short circuit or a visible spark. Components such as capacitors or diodes inside the charger can be affected if debris creates a connection between them.

While this type of event is uncommon, it can occur if environmental material enters the charger.

Recommended Next Step

If this occurs, we strongly recommend arranging a Powerpack State of Health (SOH) assessment. This allows our technicians to verify that the battery and electrical systems are operating safely and within normal parameters.

If you would like to arrange an assessment or have any concerns about your charger or Powerpack, please contact our support team.

Charging Environment Recommendations

To ensure safe and reliable charging, it is important to charge your vehicle in a clean, dry environment.

Charging in humid, wet, or dusty environments can increase the risk of moisture or debris entering the charger through ventilation openings. If foreign material or moisture reaches internal electrical components, it can create an unintended conductive path for electricity.

In some cases, this may lead to short circuits or visible sparking.

For best results, we recommend:

  • Charging indoors or in a sheltered area where possible

  • Avoiding humid or wet environments

  • Keeping the charger clean and free from dust or debris

  • Ensuring the cooling fan and ventilation openings remain unobstructed

Maintaining a clean and dry charging environment helps protect both the charger and the Powerpack, ensuring safe operation and long-term reliability.

Recommended Action

If you notice any sparking or unusual behavior, Fonz Moto recommends arranging a charger State-of-Health (SOH) assessment, including the charger and Powerpack, or battery.

This check ensures your charger and Powerpack are operating safely and within normal limits. While such events are uncommon, performing a check provides peace of mind and helps maintain long-term reliability.
